Planning a surprise proposal can feel overwhelming. You want the moment to be perfect, the location to be beautiful, and somehow keep the whole thing a surprise.
After photographing hundreds of couples throughout St. Petersburg, Clearwater, Tampa, and the greater Tampa Bay area, I’ve learned that the best proposal location isn’t always the most famous one. It’s the place that fits your relationship, your style, and the experience you want to create.
Whether you’re dreaming of a sunset beach proposal, a private waterfront moment, or something completely unique, these are some of my favorite proposal locations across Tampa Bay.
The Beach
If you’re envisioning a classic Florida proposal, the beach is hard to beat. This is by far our most popular proposal location.
From Fort De Soto Park to St. Pete Beach, Madeira Beach, Indian Rocks Beach, Pass-a-Grille, and North Clearwater Beach, Tampa Bay offers no shortage of incredible beach locations.
One thing we’ve learned after photographing hundreds of surprise proposals is that the “best” beach isn’t always the most famous beach. We usually recommend choosing a beach close to where you’re staying. The ideal spot has easy parking, natural dunes, sea oats, palm trees, or small pockets of privacy that help create variety in your photos.
We don’t typically recommend Honeymoon Island for proposals simply because of the distance from St. Petersburg and the limited advantages compared to closer, more accessible beaches. We also don’t recommend around Pier 60 either.
Soft white sand, incredible sunsets, and plenty of space to keep the proposal feeling natural make the beach a timeless choice.
Best for:
- Sunset proposals
- Couples visiting Tampa Bay
- Beach lovers
- Relaxed, romantic experiences

St. Pete Pier
The St. Pete Pier offers a little bit of everything—water views, modern architecture, tropical landscaping, and plenty of options for celebrating afterward. This is our second most popular location after the beach.
There are several proposal locations throughout the Pier depending on whether you want skyline views, open water, or something a little more private and tucked away.
Best for:
- Visitors staying downtown St. Petersburg
- Modern, clean aesthetic
- Dinner and drinks after the proposal
- Easy access for guests or celebrations
Pro Tip: Always check for festivals, concerts, or special events before choosing the Pier. Crowds can change the entire feel of the location.
Vinoy Park
For couples who love waterfront views but aren’t necessarily beach people, Vinoy Park is one of my favorite proposal locations in St. Petersburg.
With sailboats in the harbor, palm trees, and sweeping views of Tampa Bay, it creates an elegant and timeless backdrop.
What makes this area especially special is everything nearby. Within a short walk, you’ll find the Museum of Fine Arts, iconic banyan trees, waterfront parks, charming sidewalks with market lights, restaurants, and ice cream shops—perfect for celebrating afterward.
After the proposal, we can create a full engagement gallery without ever moving the car.
Best for:
- Elegant waterfront proposals
- Downtown St. Pete date nights
- Couples staying in the city
- Dinner and celebration afterward
Pro Tip: Always check the downtown event calendar. Festivals and events can significantly impact crowds and parking.
Sunken Gardens
If you’re looking for romance, Sunken Gardens feels like stepping into another world.
The winding paths, tropical plants, waterfalls, and hidden corners create an intimate atmosphere that feels surprisingly private for being in the middle of the city. This is a historical iconic spot cherished by locals.
Please note that professional photography at Sunken Gardens requires advance scheduling and an additional fee paid directly to the venue.

- Romantic, intimate proposals
- Couples wanting something unique and lush
Tampa Riverwalk & Downtown Tampa
I’m going to briefly touch on Tampa because there are so many incredible locations throughout the city.
The Tampa Riverwalk offers a mix of waterfront views, city skyline, parks, bridges, and iconic landmarks all within walking distance.
One of our favorite areas is around the University of Tampa. The historic architecture creates a dramatic and elegant backdrop that feels completely different from the beach. Just across the street is Oxford Exchange, a popular engagement photo location (note: photography requires permission and a venue fee).
We also love Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park for its open views of the river and skyline, as well as the Tampa Theatre—one of the most iconic and photogenic landmarks in the city.
The best part about downtown Tampa is the variety. Within just a short walk, you can create an entire gallery with completely different looks—waterfront, modern city, historic architecture, and urban lifestyle.
Best for:
- City-loving couples
- Modern, urban proposals
- Downtown Tampa date nights
- Engagement sessions with variety
- Architecture lovers
Pro Tip: Downtown Tampa is busiest during events and festivals, so always check the calendar before planning your proposal.
Local Nature Parks
Some of my favorite proposals have happened in locations most visitors never consider.
Quiet boardwalks, hidden trails, waterfront preserves, and local parks can create incredibly meaningful proposal experiences without crowds or distractions.
If you’re looking for something more private, I can recommend specific locations based on where you’re staying and the type of experience you’re hoping to create.
Our Dream Proposal
If you’re looking for something truly unforgettable, I’d love to photograph a proposal on a sailboat.
Imagine sailing through Tampa Bay as the sun sets, popping the question with nothing but open water and skyline views around you. If this sounds like your dream proposal, let’s make it happen.
