St. Petersburg Church Wedding Photographer | Tampa Bay Wedding Photography

I was booked for this St. Petersburg wedding nearly a year in advance, but the work didn’t begin on the wedding day—and it certainly didn’t end there.

From the initial venue walkthrough and multiple phone consultations to a packed wedding day and an intensive editing process afterward, this wedding required a lot of time and attention.

It was definitely one of the more challenging weddings I’ve photographed—and one that kept me on my toes all day.

The ceremony took place at St. Pete First United Methodist Church in downtown St. Petersburg, followed by a tented reception at a private home.

Preparing for a Wedding at St. Pete First United Methodist Church

Before the wedding, I met with the event coordinator at St. Pete First United Methodist Church for a walkthrough.

The bridal getting-ready room immediately caught my attention. It was filled with furniture and miscellaneous items that would interfere with photographs. I also noticed that two large TVs and a black pipe-and-drape curtain had been added to the church stage since the wedding photographs I had researched. The church planned to display a white image with two wedding rings on the screens, which meant the TVs were going to be very noticeable in the photos.

I brought the room and stage setup to the bride’s attention ahead of time, and the family ultimately had the church clear the getting-ready room. The TVs and draping definitely changed the look of the church, but the bright screens ended up providing something we desperately needed: light.

Even on the wedding day, I was moving furniture around to create cleaner spaces and better backgrounds for both photography and videography.

We also had multiple phone consultations leading up to the wedding because there was a lot planned and a lot that needed to fit into the timeline.

Because I knew we would need the time, I started earlier than originally planned.

This is the part of wedding photography clients don’t always see.

The photographs begin long before the shutter is pressed.

A First Look That Required Precise Positioning

The first look happened quickly, and there was one particular image that was extremely important to the bride: a clear photograph of the groom’s face as he saw her for the first time.

Kyle needed to be positioned specifically in a pew for that moment.

When a particular photograph is a non-negotiable, it needs to be communicated clearly before the wedding day so we can build our coverage around it. A first-look reaction lasts about a second, so there isn’t much opportunity for a second try.

Thirty Minutes for Portraits

During our planning conversations, we had scheduled approximately 45 minutes for family group photographs on the church stage.

The formal family photographs took longer than expected, leaving us with just 30 minutes—from 4:00 to 4:30 PM—for the wedding party and bride and groom portraits.

Thirty minutes can disappear quickly in a church as large as this one. Simply moving a full wedding party, photographers, videographer and equipment from one area of the church to another takes time.

When we finally got outside with the wedding party, it was around 4 PM and the sun was intense.

And then there was the hard deadline.

At 4:30, the church was scheduled to close. Staff were already beginning to shut things down and turn off the lights.

We ultimately went over the scheduled time to finish the portraits.

Bride and Groom Portraits in Difficult Light

By the time we reached the bride and groom portraits, there was almost no time left.

There is a park directly across the street from the church that could have offered another portrait setting, but with the bride’s long train and our limited time, moving locations wasn’t practical.

So we stayed inside the church and worked with what we had.

I used the architecture, available light and off-camera flash to create portraits in the space.

Working with off-camera flash in a dark church takes setup and positioning. When the venue is closing around you, there isn’t time to slowly build the perfect lighting setup.

You have to know your equipment, know your light and make decisions quickly.

And in a church this large, even moving from one photograph to the next can take valuable minutes.

We pushed past the scheduled closing time and got the portraits.

From the Church to the Reception

From St. Pete First United Methodist Church, we headed to the reception at a private home with a large tent set up for the celebration.

And this is where the entire energy of the day changed.

The bride and groom were exhausted. We were exhausted. So we all took a quick 5–10 minute breather.

Then it was party time.

The pressure of getting the wedding portraits was over. We could stop worrying about the clock and just photograph what was happening.

There were speeches, dancing, laughter, hugs and all of the candid moments that make receptions so much fun to photograph.

This is where I get to stop directing and start watching—looking for reactions, little interactions and the moments nobody planned.

After everything it took to get through the church portion of the day, it felt really good to just photograph the party.

The Reception & Sparkler Exit

Kyle finished his scheduled coverage, but came back later just for the fun of photographing the sparkler exit.

By the end of the night, we’d both put in extra time, but we wanted to finish the day together.

And honestly, that’s one of my favorite things about wedding photography. After all the planning, timelines, family photographs, lighting and logistics, eventually everyone lets loose and celebrates.

That’s when some of the best photographs happen.

The Work Didn’t End When the Wedding Did

The difficult church lighting made this one of my more demanding galleries to edit. It required extensive noise reduction, cleanup and AI-assisted removal of distractions.

I spent time working through the gallery and refining the images—and still delivered the finished gallery within my six-week deadline.

The wedding lasted one day.

The work behind the photographs didn’t.

St. Petersburg Church Wedding Photography

This wedding at St. Pete First United Methodist Church was a good example of what goes into creating a finished wedding gallery—from the initial walkthrough and planning to navigating difficult light, a changing timeline and extensive post-production.

Wedding days don’t always go according to plan.

Sometimes you have to move furniture, change your approach, work around difficult light, race the clock and figure things out as you go.

And honestly, that’s part of what makes wedding photography fun.

You never know exactly what the day is going to throw at you. You just have to keep moving, keep creating and make the most of what’s in front of you.

Xina Scuderi Photography was amazing to work with! Very easygoing, professional, and incredibly creative. Everything was done on time, and I absolutely loved my pictures. Highly recommend!
Had the most wonderful experience being photographed by Xina with my family for a Fall photoshoot at Gallaghers. She is so easy to work with, makes everyone feel comfortable in front of the camera and is a ton of fun to be around. Highly recommend her for your next event or photoshoot. Her turnaround time was fantastic and the vast array of images presented to us was amazing. Can’t speak more highly of her, both in her technical skills/shooting/editing etc and also her as a person/artist/creative. Five stars all day long! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Just received the most incredible photos from Xina! She captured my beach yoga class so BEAUTIFULLY—the colors of the sky and ocean stood out in such a powerful way and truly elevated our presence. I was blown away by her dedication and artistic approach—she put so much passion and effort into shooting from different angles to capture the energy of our yoga and sound bath class. She even edited out a distracting sign in the background and enhanced the colors so everything looked even more magical. The turnaround time was so fast, and I felt completely supported by her throughout the process. Xina isn’t just a photographer, she’s an artist, and I’m so grateful to have her talent behind the lens. If you’re in St. Pete—especially if you’re dreaming of stunning sunset photos at Upham Beach—you absolutely need to connect with her!

We setup a sunset photo session, we like to have family photos every couple of years, and Xina made this session so special. We could not be happier with the pictures, and with her directions and her professional attitude on having fun while getting these bits of history inked in digital medium. If you want a great set of pictures during the sunset she is the one to call.

Thank you Xina

We booked a session while on vacation and really appreciated how easy she made the process. She met us right outside our hotel, which fit perfectly into our schedule and made it effortless on our part. She blended into our day without any stress or time-consuming planning. The photos captured our trip nicely and were a convenient way to get some family shots without having to arrange a big photo session.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience! I’m so glad the session felt easy and stress-free—that’s exactly what I aim for. While some photographers spend a lot of their clients’ time on outfit planning, props, and storytelling concepts, I keep my sessions simple so you can enjoy the moment without extra calls, consultations, or preparation. I want the process to fit naturally into your day, capture authentic memories, and give you beautiful photos without taking you away from your vacation. You are such a beautiful family, and your photos turned out absolutely spectacular—it was a joy to capture those moments for you!

Xina did an excellent job photographing our baby girl for her 1/2 birthday! We had family portraits taken with her at The Vinoy in the tea garden which was a perfect location! Xina was very professional and knew exactly where we should pose to get the best results. She even sang silly songs to our baby to get her to look at her and it worked!

We were so impressed with the quality of the photos we received. They came out better than we expected and will be treasured forever! We are going to have to get some of them printed to hang up in our home. They are worth every penny! We can’t recommend Xina enough for any of your professional photography needs.
